피터캣의 샵 익스클루시브 볼캡은 약 6개월의 준비 과정을 거쳐 완성되었습니다. 지난 인디고 다잉 버전의 경우 베이스가 되는 볼캡의 쉐입과 사이즈를 결정하는 데만 오랜 시간이 걸려 총 1년 가까이 소요되었지만, 이번에는 이미 완성되어 있는 원형 볼캡을 활용해 제작 기간을 상당히 단축할 수 있었습니다.

그럼에도 적지 않은 시간이 걸린 이유는 수미 잉크(먹) 염색이 모자에 사용된 코튼 트윌 원단에 얼마나 안정적으로 자리 잡는지 반복적으로 확인해야 했기 때문입니다. 완벽한 블랙으로 염색하는 것은 쉽지 않았지만, 유즈드 블랙에 가까운 염색 농도를 확인한 뒤 이 톤으로 진행하기로 결정했습니다. 오히려 완벽한 블랙보다 살짝 바랜 듯한 느낌이 더 매력적이라 판단했고, 봉제선을 따라 자연스럽게 드러나는 심 라인의 페이딩이 한층 더 자연스러운 분위기를 만들어준다고 생각했습니다.

인디고 다잉과 수미 잉크 다잉은 구조적으로 전혀 다른 방식의 염색법입니다. 인디고는 산화·환원 반응을 통해 색이 섬유에 고착되는 반면, 수미는 먹의 핵심 성분인 그을음, 즉 탄소 입자가 섬유 표면과 구조에 물리적으로 자리 잡는 방식입니다. 이런 차이로 인해 오래 착용했을 때의 페이딩 양상도 서로 다르게 나타납니다. 인디고는 마찰에 의해 색이 조금씩 빠지면서 대비가 강한 페이딩을 만들어내는 반면, 스미는 탄소 입자가 마찰과 세탁을 통해 서서히 빠지면서 전체적으로 부드럽고 대비가 적은 톤으로 변화합니다.

화학적 고착이든 물리적 고착이든 이염의 가능성은 남아 있으므로, 밝은 색상의 제품과 마찰이 일어나지 않도록 주의해서 착용하시는 것을 권장합니다.

Peter Cat(ピーターキャット)のショップエクスクルーシブなボールキャップは、約6ヶ月にわたる準備期間を経て完成しました。前回のインディゴ染めバージョンでは、ベースとなるボールキャップの形とサイズを決めるだけで長い時間がかかり、完成までに約1年を要しましたが、今回はすでに完成している原型のボールキャップを活用したことで、制作期間を大幅に短縮することができました。

それでも決して短くない時間がかかったのは、Sumi Ink(墨)染めがキャップに使われているコットンツイル素材にどの程度きれいに定着するかを、何度も確認する必要があったためです。完璧なブラックに染め上げることは難しかったものの、ユーズドブラックに近い染色濃度を確認したうえで、このトーンで進めることを決めました。完璧なブラックよりも、わずかに色が抜けたような風合いのほうがむしろ魅力的だと感じたこと、また縫い目に沿って自然に現れるシームラインのフェーディングが、より自然な雰囲気を生み出すと考えたためです。

インディゴ染めとSumi Ink染めは、構造的にまったく異なる染色方法です。インディゴは酸化・還元反応によって色が繊維に定着するのに対し、Sumiは墨の核心成分である煤(すす)、つまり炭素粒子が繊維の表面と構造に物理的に定着する方式です。この違いによって、長く着用した際のフェーディングの現れ方も異なります。インディゴは摩擦によって色が少しずつ落ち、コントラストの強いフェーディングが生まれるのに対し、Sumiは炭素系の黒が摩擦や洗濯によって徐々に抜けていき、全体的に柔らかくコントラストの少ないトーンへと変化していきます。

化学的定着か物理的定着かにかかわらず、色移りの可能性は残るため、明るい色のアイテムとの摩擦には注意して着用されることをおすすめします。

The Peter Cat shop-exclusive ball cap was completed after roughly six months of development. The previous indigo-dyed version took nearly a full year, mostly because so much time went into deciding on the base cap's shape and size, but this time an already-established cap silhouette was used, which meaningfully shortened the production timeline.

Even so, the process still took considerable time, since it required repeated testing to see how well Sumi ink (traditional East Asian ink, made from soot) would take to the cotton twill fabric used for the cap. Achieving a perfectly solid black through this dyeing method proved difficult, so the decision was made to move forward once the dye concentration reached a tone close to a used, slightly faded black. A tone just shy of true black felt more appealing in its own right, and the way the seam lines fade naturally along the stitching adds to the sense of authenticity.

Indigo dyeing and Sumi ink dyeing work on fundamentally different principles: indigo fixes to the fiber through an oxidation-reduction reaction, while Sumi works by physically embedding soot, the carbon particles at the core of the ink, into the surface and structure of the fiber. Because of this difference, the two also fade differently with wear. Indigo tends to fade unevenly through friction, producing higher-contrast fading, while the carbon-based black of Sumi ink gradually lifts through friction and washing, fading into an overall softer tone with less contrast.

Regardless of whether the color is fixed chemically or physically, there remains some possibility of dye transfer, so we recommend taking care to avoid friction against lighter-colored items.
