승평요(昇平窯) 컵

이번 가마에서 나온 기물들 중, 개인적으로 마음에 들어 소량만 들여온 작품이 있다. 이 컵은 내가 직접 의뢰한 것은 아니지만, 내가 주문한 찻잔을 제작하는 과정에서 작가가 비슷한 맥락 속에서 다른 접근으로 완성한 결과물이다. 의뢰작과 크게 벗어나지 않으면서도 또 다른 매력을 보여주기에 함께 소개하고 싶었다. 무엇보다 이번 가마에서 나온 작품들은 특별한 의미가 있다. 승평요가 10년 만에 다시 지은 장작가마에서 소성한 첫 작품들이기 때문이다. 새로운 가마에서 태어난 첫 기물이라는 점만으로도 소장 가치가 높다고 생각한다. 내가 의뢰한 피터캣 찻잔이 다소 작거나 외형적으로 투박하다고 느껴졌던 이들이라면, 이번 작품에서 또 다른 재미를 발견할 수 있을지도 모른다. 겉면은 한층 더 유려하게 다듬어졌으며, 크기 또한 여유 있어 단순한 찻잔이 아니라 커피잔으로도 활용할 수 있는 실용성을 지니고 있다.

今回の窯から生まれた器の中で、個人的に気に入り少量だけ仕入れた作品がある。このカップは私が直接依頼したものではないが、私の茶碗を製作する過程で作家が同じ文脈の中で別のアプローチとして完成させたものだ。依頼作から大きく逸脱することなく、別の魅力を見せてくれるため一緒に紹介したいと思った。何より今回の窯から出た作品は特別な意味を持っている。勝平窯が10年ぶりに新しく築いた薪窯で焼成した最初の作品だからである。新しい窯から生まれた最初の器という点だけでも、十分にコレクション価値が高いと思う。私が依頼したPeter Catの茶碗がやや小さい、あるいは素朴に感じられた人なら、この作品でまた別の楽しみを見つけられるかもしれない。外側はさらに滑らかに整えられ、サイズも余裕があるため、単なる茶碗としてだけでなくコーヒーカップとしても使える実用性を備えている。

Among the pieces fired in this kiln, there is one that I personally liked and brought in only in small quantities. This cup was not something I directly commissioned, but rather a result the artist created during the process of making my teacups—an alternative approach within the same context. While it does not stray far from my commissioned pieces, it offers a different kind of charm, which is why I wanted to introduce it together. Above all, the works from this firing hold special meaning: they are the very first pieces fired in Seungpyeongyo’s newly rebuilt wood-fired kiln, constructed after ten years. The fact that it is the first creation born from a new kiln alone gives it high value for collection. For those who may have felt the Peter Cat teacup I commissioned was somewhat small or rustic in appearance, this piece might reveal another kind of appeal. The surface is finished with a smoother refinement, and its larger size provides versatility, making it suitable not only as a teacup but also as a coffee cup.
